The owner was experiencing losses and was ordered to test the tank fleet and underground pipework. MassTech licensees tested the entire installation and pronounced it tight. Pump calibration checks were also made but the losses continued. On further questioning, the owner revealed that the site was close to the oil terminal and that this site was usually the first to receive deliveries on any particular morning. MassTech placed thermal sensors/data loggers in each tank and analysis showed delivery temperatures were considerably higher than tank averages. Subsequent temperature modelling work showed that the effects of cooling after a delivery accounted almost exactly for the book losses being experienced. The oil company agreed an ongoing discount with this site.
